Author Eric Rutkow, speaking about his book American Canopy: Trees, Forests and the Making of a Nation

Eric Rutkow is an historian and lawyer.  He is a Yale College and Harvard Law School graduate.  He earned his PhD in history from Yale.  Currently, he is professor of history at the University of Central Florida.  Rutkow is the author of American Canopy, is a broad historical study of our nation's forests and trees and their effect on the first settlers and colonizers, utility to westward expansion and industrialization, and relation to the environment and global warming.  He has addressed the New England Society of Arborists about the loss of trees, particularly elms and chestnuts.  His most recent book is titled Longest Line on the Map about the Pan-American Highway.
