Conservation Committee

PURPOSE

Conservation informs and involves the membership in all aspects of the conservation and preservation of natural resources and plans and organizes activities relating to conservation. Pursuing committee members interests, this includes shared viewing and discussion of films, books, webinars, and tours of local facilities or sites dedicated to conservation. With Civic and often including Horticulture, the Conservation Committee establishes ongoing community-focused projects. The Chair or alternate is encouraged to attend GCA NAL conference and Federated Garden Clubs of CT Conservation School and report back to the club membership about them.

Our 2023 Trex Plastic Challenge

The Garden Club of New Haven met the NexTrex community plastic challenge sponsored by Trex. We collected and recycled 540.5 pounds of plastic bags and film in six months,  when members, and a few commercial partners, brought enough plastic to get us over the finish line. This plastic challenge illustrates the teamwork and cooperation supporting a cleaner environment by keeping more than 500 pounds out of the waste stream.

A reward for reaching the 500-pound challenge is a Trex bench to be donated to a worthwhile organization.
